STORY TIME: It has been 6 years since I began working on my business, the family business. That’s where this photo is from, trying to figure out what plants we have for product photos of raised garden beds. In the foreground you’ll notice nasturtiums and a bunch of sticks (bottom right). My pepper plant has died at the age of 2. Leave it to the desert’s unpredicatability to send me basically a whole 6 hours of non-stop beautiful snow, something I’ve wanted my entire life, and it kills off the would-be perennial pepper. In my mind, it snows that much only every 7-ish years. Life is full of trade-offs and silver linings. I got the experience of a lifetime (refer to previous sentence for correct timing.) Anyways, back to the story.
6 years ago I was applying to the Forest Service (probably could have widened my search) looking for jobs after graduation. After a lot of introspection I’d decided the tools and business was very special to me, and without me, might fall to someone else. It wasn’t a great thought. So we, my brother, Mom, and I, got to work. (My brother studied business amd has a great mind for math and engineering thank GOD. Me? Yeah my ecology degree really helps out the business. Hopefully it means we get great photos.) Last year, the yard here was full of stainless steel planters and bare soil and compost. I didn’t plant in any of it. Why??? Because we needed to test the stainless and they’d get moved around and dug up. Finally it looks like they’ll be planted, and I honestly can’t wait. My blue buckets have disintegrated, making them impossible to move and photograph. Nobody should have to look at that! I have felt lost and bored for the last year. Seeing GoFerment use my photo, having space I’m planning to plant, getting new photos up of the products we’ve been working on, (design, social media, and physically making products we sell is like my whole job) and I’ve never felt more invigorated. This is what they mean when they say that having a purpose can change your life. In the last month or so I’ve gone from zombie to human. Find your purpose!
